Food Forest

In 2023, Sustainable Renton broke ground behind our community garden on something truly special. Celebration Foursquare Church donated the use of an additional 40' by 120' plot of land to develop a "Food Forest". With a grant from the King Conservation district, our volunteers worked to make this dream of a sustainable food system for our community a reality.

What is a Food Forest?

A food forest is a sustainable, self-sustaining agricultural system designed to mimic the natural ecosystems of a forest while producing food for people and wildlife. It consists of multiple layers of edible plants, including fruit and nut trees, shrubs, herbs, vines, and ground cover, all working together to create a balanced and regenerative system. Food forests promote biodiversity, improve soil health, conserve water, and provide long-term food security for communities. By integrating native and perennial plants and incorporating permaculture principles, they require minimal maintenance and offer a resilient, eco-friendly way to grow food while restoring natural habitat

Sustainable Renton's Food Forest is a vibrant, community-driven project designed to provide long-term food security while restoring the local ecosystem. With some young fruit saplings already started, we are working to integrate more berry bushes, perennial herbs, and nutrient-rich ground cover that can all work together to create a self-sustaining, regenerative food source for years to come.

As it matures, the Sustainable Renton Food Forest will provide locally grown food for our Food Justice Program, which will ensure it can nourish those who are facing food insecurity. This will also serve as an education space for people of all ages to learn how to foster a more sustainable environment in their own backyards!

How You Can Help

As we are in the beginning stages of planting, there is much work to be done!

The Food Forest is in need of weekly watering and weeding as we launch into the growing season!

Our Food Forest Manager, Kelly, oversees work parties to establish new plants and guilds around the saplings that are already in place. You can stay up to date on current work parties by visiting our Events Page!

If you would like to submit an application to volunteer with a small group, or if you would like to volunteer outside of our scheduled work parties, fill out the form below!
